The Artistic Vision

Meet Anna Stone

Anna Stone’s artistic journey began with five years of specialized training at Die Kruin School of Art before she moved on to formalize her craft at Pretoria Technikon. There, she earned her National Higher Diploma with a Masters in Drawing, grounding her work in rigorous technical discipline.

Following a decade-long tenure as a Media Developer for the College for Educational Technology (COLET) – where she applied her fine arts training to educational design – Anna returned to her easel full-time.

Today, with over thirty years of experience, she resides in the heart of the Karoo. Her realistic depictions of the people and landscapes of Prince Albert are a culmination of a lifetime spent observing the dialogue between the internal spirit and the external world.

Inspiration

Mediums & Techniques

While versatile, Anna’s primary medium is Pastel painting—a traditional material beloved since the 18th century that lends her work a soft, timeless quality. Her techniques include:

  • Soft powder pastel & gouache on cotton
  • Pastel on paper
  • Charcoal & Conté
  • Oils
  • “To me, art must be truthful. I enjoy doing portraits the most, using objects and clothing to tell the story of the sitter.”
Inspiration

Classical Influences & Mastery of Light

Anna draws heavy inspiration from the Old Masters:

  • Caravaggio: Infusing her work with chiaroscuro (the dramatic contrast between light and dark) and rich textures.
  • Vermeer & Ingres: Creating intense, storytelling gazes set against intricately detailed backgrounds.
  • Millet: Evoking a rustic, comforting ambiance through the inclusion of domestic animals.
